Cloves
Eugenia caryophyllus bud oil / extract
“Warming scalp sensation, aromatic, the traditional chebe partner”

How It Works
The mechanism.
Cloves are rich in eugenol, a warming aromatic compound long valued for the gentle tingle and feeling of stimulation it brings to the scalp. In the infusion it lends warmth and a clean, spiced scent - and it pairs with chebe exactly as the Sara women have always combined the two.

Origins & Tradition
Where it comes from.
Zanzibar (Tanzania) is historically known as 'The Spice Island' — a global centre of clove cultivation that shaped the island's entire economy and culture for centuries. Clove oil has been used in Swahili coastal hair care traditions for generations, mixed into coconut oil for scalp treatments. In Sara chebe paste preparations, clove is one of the traditional additive ingredients alongside the chebe powder itself — its circulatory-stimulating role was empirically understood long before eugenol was isolated. The Sanyu blend honours this historical co-use: chebe and clove in the same formulation, as the Sara women always made it.

The Research
What the science says.
Zanzibar - the Spice Island - built a culture around clove, and clove oil has scented Swahili coastal hair care for generations, traditionally blended into coconut oil for the scalp. In Sara chebe paste, clove is the classic companion to the powder; Sanyu keeps that pairing intact.
